The Emir's Cup: Doha - 2009

Top young colts and fillies gathered together on the green lawns of the Doha Race track, under perfect conditions, to compete for top honors at the Emirs Cup help in Doha on the 24th of March 2009.

Michael Byatt Arabians was once again proud to be on hand, to not only assist in the presentation of the young stars in the Al Shaqab stables, but to also watch some of their own youngsters, bred back in Texas compete, and win at this prestigious event.

Al Adeed Al Shaqab fillies swept all of the age groups.  The 2 and 3 year old fillies were both bred by Michael Byatt Arabians and purchased by Al Shaqab as weanlings.  The eventual Champion, Mayassa Al Shaqab, shown by Shk Hamad himself!, is out of Al Hambra El Dakar, who is by Dakar El Jamaal and out Luz De Fe, a daughter of El Shaklan.  The Reserve Champion filly was Magheeda Al Shaqab, again by Al Adeed, and out of ZT Maghan.  ZT Maghan is a recent acquisition of Al Shaqab and a mare that has now proven herself not only in show ring but as a great breeding mare as well.  ZT Maghan is the dam of the 2008 Al Khalediah Champion Filly, Sara Al Mohammadiah.

One of the “other” great stallions at Al Shaqab, the reigning World Champion, Marwan Al Shaqab, sired the Champion and reserve Champion Colts; the Champion being the 2008 US Reserve National Champion, OFW Magic Wan.  Reserve to Magic Wan was Massoud Al Shaqab.

BaanderosThe richest prize in Arabian Horse Shows awaits those individuals that accumulate the highest points in a series of shows leading up to the Dubai International Championships.  For the Champions it means 200,000.00 USD for the filly, colt, mare, and stallion champion.  And for the second year in a row Michael Byatt Arabians horses won 3 of the 4 prizes.  An unprecedented recognition of the horses selected by Michael Byatt for horses owners from around the world.

Miss El PowerThis year the filly Champion was Miss El Power.  Shown by Michael Byatt she was Champion in Menton, France – Towerlands, England, and Doha, Qatar.  The Mare Champion was Venetzia, no stranger to the winners circle; Venetzia was Champion in Menton, Hasselat, and Doha.  The Colt Champion was Baanderos who swept every show this season but for one.  In addition Baanderos was the World Champion Colt, while not part of the Dubai Cup series, we congratulate all for this outstanding win.

We congratulate and thank each of the owners of these horses for having the faith and belief in Michael Byatt Arabians to allow us to be a part of their selection.

2009 Qatar International Championships

Marwan Al ShaqabFor all of us involved with Al Shaqab, the 2009 Championships would be an event which would make a full circle in the competitive life of Marwan AL Shaqab.

It was here; at these championships that Marwan first gave us a glimpse of what was to come.  Here, presented by Eileen Verdieck, Marwan won the yearling colt class and the Junior Championship, defeating the reigning World Champion en route to his first victory.  So it was only fitting that 8 years later he return to his native Qatar to compete in front of his countrymen for the title of Senior Champion.

With perfect 20’s for type and head and neck Marwan won the senior stallion class earning him the right to compete against his son, Baanderos, for the title of champion.  When the announcer proclaimed Marwan as the Champion hundreds of well wishers flooded into the arena for a photo opportunity they had longed to capture for many years.  Marwan, with his usual grace and dignity stood as people clamored about to have their moment with this living legend.

In addition to Marwan’s win, Al Shaqab’s Venetzia also claimed the Mare Championship for the second year in a row.  This marks the 3rd outing for Venetzia in Qatar; the first took place at the 2007 Championships where she was named Champion Filly. By winning this title, Venetzia guaranteed her spot as the winner of the 2009 Dubai Cup, earning her the richest prize in the Arabian show world.  In addition, Miss El Power, by winning the Junior Championship in fillies for AL Shaqab, also guaranteed herself the Dubai Cup in the filly competition.  Michael Byatt Arabians is both proud and appreciative to have selected these 2 great champions for the Al Shaqab Stud.  We are also happy to announce, with great excitement, that Venetzia will be a mother in 2009, as she is expecting her first foal by Marwan Al Shaqab!

In the colt division Amir AL Shaqab, bred by Michael Byatt Arabians, who is by Gazal Al Shaqab and out of the Parys El Jamaal daughter, Amira Madrona, was Reserve Champion Colt.

For Al Shaqab, Michael Byatt Arabians, and Giacomo Capacci Arabians, the 2009 Qatari International Championships represented another stunning success.  We congratulate all involved!

Scottsdale 2009

Many years ago the mission statement at Michael Byatt Arabians was to create a breeding program that would one day produce the horses that we would, in turn condition, train, and exhibit.  We set out to breed great horses – we fine tuned our likes and dislikes, we sought out the best breeding stock from around the globe.  Without a doubt the success of this ideology is being witnessed with more and more frequency.

The horses we show today will have in their pedigrees Marwan, Besson, Gazal, Parys, Dakharo, Dakar El Jamaal…we will exhibit the sons and daughters of these illustrious stallions as well as their descendents.  In addition, there are several mare lines that we incorporate into our breeding program, that we exhibit to demonstrate the phenotype which we admire.  And of course, we are always looking, adding, and refining those horses that we will use – it is ever evolving.

Baahir El MarwanScottsdale has long been regarded as one of the most competitive and important Arabian horse shows on the year’s calendar.  In 2009 Michael Byatt Arabians exhibited 9 horses, each representing individuals that we use in our breeding program.  In the colt division, we exhibited 2 outstanding youngsters, both of whom won their age groups by unanimous decision.  In the yearling colts it was Baahir El Marwan that took the class.  He is by Marwan and out of the Besson daughter HB Bessolea.  This combination is no stranger to the winners circle.  Baahir is a full brother to Baanderos, the reigning World Champion Colt.  During the Scottsdale show Baahir was acquired by our friends from down under, Mystica Arabians, from breeder Susan Taylor.  In the 2 year old field, Perignon made his show ring debut and won unanimously.  Perignon is out of our Padrons Psyche daughter, Psychic Karma, and is co owned by Michael Byatt Arabians and Luis Miguel Muzquiz of Mexico City, Mexico.  We have been very patient with Perignon as his birthday is in late July but he was ready for this competition.  Perignon is very tall and elegant with an exotic head, combined with explosive animation. Breeders from all over met us at the stalls after his class with wishes for breeding contracts!  Unfortunately, his birth date precluded us from making commitments as he is still very young.  But stay tuned and watch out – this is a top show horse that will also be a top sire.

Abha QalamsIn the filly division we took 2 beautiful fillies, one a Marwan daughter, and the other out of a Marwan daughter – more on her pedigree in a moment.  The yearling filly, Marwa Al Shaqab, took second place honors in a very competitive field, being 1st on one card.  Marwa, owned by Al Shaqab Stud, and bred by Michael Byatt Arabians and Ray and Nora Tatum, is out of Majaraani, who is by Thee Desperado and out of our Ali Jamaal daughter Majalis.  In the 2 yr. old filly class Abha Qalams, a recent import from Spain, made her show debut.  Purchased by Michael Byatt for friends Ray and Nora Tatum, from breeder Marieta Salas at just 2 weeks of age, a lot was expected of this Spanish sensation.  She did not disappoint, winning the 2 year old class and being named Reserve Junior Champion.  Abha Qalams has a very interesting pedigree.  She is by the late Alfabia Damascus, who is by WH Justice and out of a daughter of Parys El Jamaal.  On her mother side she is out of the Marwan Al Shaqab daughter, Abha Mudira. Congratulations once again to Marieta Salas who’s breeding program continues to produce super star foals!  We were also extremely proud to have presented the 2007 World Champion filly, Layan AL Khalediah, a daughter of Dakharo to her Top Ten in the 3 yr. old filly class.  This is a very extreme and statuesque filly, a great testament to her sire and grandsire.

In the Scottsdale Signature Classes 2 yearlings, both out of our Ludjin El Jamaal daughter, MFA Annies Song were Top Ten.  Allesio, a 2008 colt by Besson took a strong Top Ten and was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Greg Jacobs.  Michael Byatt Arabians retained breedings and believe, in the future, this colt will be one of the super star breeding and show colts anywhere on the planet. He will be shown by Andy Sellman in Las Vegas and we expect great things.  Annjolina, by Marwan was Top Ten in the yearling filly class, giving Annies Song 2 winners from her first foal crop since being purchased from Sheila Morgan.  MFA Annies Song also produced a Top Ten 2 yr. old colt, MFA Shiraz, again shown by Andy Sellman.  Thank you Sheila for allowing us the privilege of sharing your wonderful mare.

In the 3 year old colt class Aria Impresario, by Marwan, made his return to the ring after his triumphant yearling year.  Already a US National Champion, Impresario dominated the 3 year old class in a unanimous decision.  Aria Impresario went on to be named the Reserve Champion Stallion of the show and in doing so earned the recognition once again of his greatness.  The US National Futurities are next up for this super star colt.  And in the meantime, while awaiting his next show outing, he is breeding wonderful mares, and siring some superstars from his first foal crop. (Small teaser here, our mare MFA Annies Song just had an Impresario colt!)  This is one sire line that shows no sign of slowing down!  From Nazeer to Impresario – follow the sire line in this pedigree, it has an unbroken chain of greatness.

In addition to the horses we took from our farm in Texas, we were honored and pleased to see all of the Marwan, Gazal, Besson, and Parys children doing so well in their classes.  Marwan was the leading sire of the 2009 Scottsdale All Arabian show.  Congratulations to all owners, trainers, and breeders of these outstanding Arabian horses!
